OUR Mission
Friends of the Battalion was created to promote the long-term sustainability of The Battalion
student newspaper as a living laboratory, which provides high-impact learning and pre-professional practice of job skills and student press innovation at Texas A&M University. Through mentorship, fundraising, networking and public education, Friends of The Battalion will work alongside current Battalion staffers to continue the publication’s 129-year tradition of journalistic excellence into the future.
Career Preparation
Working at The Battalion gives students access to a living laboratory that equips them with skills they can use in careers in media, communications and a variety of industries.
Free Speech
Forum
Free speech is the lifeblood of our democracy and the foundation of academic inquiry. It is essential for providing a robust learning environment for an increasingly diverse student body.
Informed
Student Body
With a mission to advance the public interest, public universities have a responsibility to not be just outspoken advocates for free speech, but leaders in providing a forum for civil discourse. The Battalion carries the distinguished honor as the student-led voice on campus.

The Battalion's lasting impact
“The Batt was my second home while I was at A&M, and the journalism program equipped me with everything I needed for my reporting job following graduation.”
Allison Garcia, '07
This is exactly the wrong time in our country’s history to be threatening the growth of young journalists. We need to encourage them to protect our democracy, not discourage them..”
Mark Moran '88
“Although I didn't end up in journalism, my time at the Batt made me a better writer. Writing well makes me a better lawyer and makes countless other Batt alumni better at their jobs, too, whether in journalism or not.”
Matt Rigney '05
“I learned more hard work and being part of a team there than in any classroom.”
Kenny Ryan, '08
